What is IATSE Local 495? PDF Print E-mail

IATSE Local 495, the Motion Picture Studio Mechanics of Greater San Diego, represents San Diego’s Professional Motion Picture, Film, Television, Video and Digital Filming Crafts people in the region. This includes Hair & Makeup, Wardrobe, Grip, Set Lighting Technicians, Script Supervisors, Sound, Props, Set Dressers, Video Playback & Assist, and Special Effects. We’re a one-stop shop for all your filming and production personnel needs when filming in beautiful San Diego!

Geographical jurisdiction: San Diego City and County; South to the International Border, east to Imperial County and north to Dana Cove in Orange County (…or until someone complains)

Venues: We cover all Motion Picture Film, Digital, & Video Production, including Reality Shows & Commercials within the jurisdiction, whether for Theatre, Television, Internet and/or Mobile Presentation.

Jobs: All crafts & classifications departments in Film and Television Production except Camera, Transportation, Security and Production Assistants.  This includes Paint & Scenic, Props, Set Dressing, Construction, Greens, Video Assist and Playback, Craft Services, Grips, Electric, Set Lighting Technicians, Special Effects, Sound, First Aid, Script, Hair & Makeup, Wardrobe, Studio Teachers, Production Office Coordinators & Accountants, and Locations. Set Designers, Costumes Designers, Production Designers and Art Directors may also be covered if hired locally. We cover everything but the camera, for the camera!

Qualifications needed and application procedures: Any person of good moral character and professional reputation is eligible to make application for membership provided such person has reached the age of eighteen (18) years and have been a resident within our jurisdiction for at least eighteen (18) months preceding their application (unless waived by the International for proper cause). All applicants must provide a verifiable copy of a current resume, three (3) Letters of recommendations from professionals of the applicants’ craft and be sponsored by a member of the local, in good standing. All applicants requiring occupational licenses, permits and/or certificates should be prepared to present documentation verifying such. A good knowledge of the fundamentals of film making, set etiquette and other elements fundamental to your specific craft interest is important. You must be good to get a job and once you have the job you become eligible for membership. Membership is required after 30 daysof employment. Membership is NOT a guarantee of work.A membership kit will be provided upon request.

Benefits: We are part of the IATSE National Benefits Fund which includes a choice of Health Plans with Vision and Dental, along with an annuity and pension.

Training Programs: Certification through the Entertainment Technician Certification Program can be provided to qualified members.  Training is provided for various crafts as the need arises.  Contact the office or website for current training schedule.
